VM40
The VM40 logs four vibration channels at once so a gearbox, a motor, and two fan housings can be watched on the same trace. It is a monitoring instrument, not a lab analyzer: bolt it near the bearing, leave it through the shift, and compare the envelope with last week’s baseline. When the amplitude climbs while the machine still sounds “normal,” the next AlignSense pass or the next bearing change is scheduled against a number.
Channels are independent, so a noisy abatement fan does not mask a quiet handler column. Mount on a clean face, and use the same stud or magnet each time so the comparison stays honest. The desk uses the VM40 when a tool cannot be taken down for a full inspection but still has to be trusted until the weekend window.
Do not treat the logger as a replacement for alignment. Vibration names that a coupling or a bearing is drifting; the AL12 names how far the shaft is off and which shim stack closes it. Read the setup note if the operator still swears the box “sounds fine.”
